What you'll practise
A writing task you can have marked
Community gardens
Read the passage below and write a summary of it in 25 to 50 words. Community gardens are shared plots of land where local residents grow vegetables, fruit and flowers. In many cities they have been created on empty lots, on the edges of parks or on the roofs of apartment buildings. Their most obvious benefit is fresh food, which can be especially valuable in neighbourhoods where shops sell few affordable fruits and vegetables. However, people who take part often say that the social benefits matter even more. Gardeners meet neighbours they would not otherwise know, older members share skills with younger ones, and newcomers to a country find an easy way to join local life. Some studies have also linked regular gardening with lower stress. The main difficulty is keeping gardens running over time. Land may be reclaimed for building, and projects often depend on a small number of committed volunteers. Gardens that have secure agreements with landowners and shared responsibility among members tend to last longest.
- Identify the main idea of the passage.
- Include the most important supporting points.
- Use complete sentences and your own words where you can.
